How much curve the rail line has from the widepoint out to each end. Straighter rails hold a line with less steering effort; curvier rails turn with less resistance and release faster.

The board's maximum width. Wider adds paddle power, stability, and easy wave-catching; narrower is faster and more responsive but demands better balance and paddling fitness.

The shape of the nose. A fuller, rounder nose adds paddling stability and glide; a pointier nose reduces drag and rides more like a dedicated performance shortboard.

The shape of the tail. A rounder or pin tail holds a smoother, more drawn-out turn; a squarer tail releases quickly for sharp, snappy direction changes.

The overall curve lifting the nose and tail off flat. More rocker turns tighter and handles steep or fast waves without pearling; less rocker holds speed and glide on weak or flat sections.

How the rocker curve is split between the nose and tail. Nose-biased holds a line on bigger, faster waves; tail-biased makes the tail looser and easier to pivot.

How many fins the board runs, and where they sit. Fin count and layout change how a board turns, drives, and releases — from a single fin's smooth, drawn-out arcs, to a thruster's balanced drive and pivot, to a quad's extra speed down the line.
